Weekly series 52 wraps up & I rank the best covers

One of the best comic series I have ever read ended this week. Four writers and a bevy of artists managed to produce a weekly comic book for the last year and it was great. The writing did it for me, not the art. I doubt there is a way to have top knotch art on a weekly book. This was a much more satisfying experience than Marvel’s Civil War. Civil War shipped late so the artist could make it look great, and it did. But the writing ruined it for me, while the writing in 52 made it one of the best comic experiences I’ve had. While the art inside was not always strong, the covers were fantastic. In fact, I’m going to have a countdown of the top six covers. There is a link to how he designed each cover as well. Many were influenced by famous paintings, magazine and book covers.
Number six

Great Batman cover. One of the few times he appeared in the series.
Number five

Simple yet so effective. You know the Question is in trouble after this.
Number four

You really need a great cover for the first issue of a series like this and they nailed it for this one. Bats, WW and Supes are gone. Who will take up the mantel of hero while they are gone.
Number three

How can you not love the idea of using the mini Metal Men as bullets? What an inspired use of these characters. The James Bond pose is great too.
Number two

I thought this was going to be my favorite but I forgot about this last one.
Number one

This picture is so dynamic yet everything works. They are all pointed in the same direction and the light even directs you that way. Fantastic.
Again, this whole series was great. Some arcs were better than others. I loved the Black Adam stories. I have an affinity for Geoff Johns and he delivered with the Black Adams stories. But I ended up caring about the other characters as well. That is saying something considering I have never liked Booster Gold, Steel, Ralph Dibny or the Question. I do now. I loved seeing Animal Man again and the whole mad scientist island was truly inspired. I can’t begin to say how much fun this was and it kept me going back to the store every week to get the next installment. Kudos to the writers (Johns, Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka and Mark Waid) for a monumental achievement.
