I'm glad to have that advice, having considered a second attempt. I was also thinking of rereading The Stand, which I read as a young teen, but my standards have evolved, of course, and I wonder if it will hold up.

Yeah, and even the history of the Spanish Armada was horrendous in the film. The Armada was faced down by Francis Drake-- Sir Walter Raleigh had absolutely nothing to do with it. And it's not like the Armada came out of the blue either, the Spaniards sent it to kick the English out of the Netherlands and stop the privateering-- they'd already been at war for 3 years! Philip II wasn't trying to conquer or rule England in any way, the Spaniards just wanted the English to stop meddling. (They couldn't even hold the Netherlands!) And ironically, they eventually did succeed-- Spain prevailed in nearly every sea battle after the Armada, even taking out Drake himself a few years later when the English got caught off guard! England sent its own Armadas against Spain that came to grief, year after the Armada in fact, while Spanish soldiers actually did invade England around 1594-1595 thereabouts, burned down the country's west:
<a href="http://www.historybuff.com/library/refspain.html" rel="nofollow">Spanish Armada</a> Looks like England has been invaded since 1066 after all, and quite successfully.

I can overlook a bit of historical inaccuracy if it tells an interesting story and isn't too over the top, but the Elizabeth movies thus far can't seem to get a single thing correct. It's a shame, because Cate Blanchett really is talented, but she's stuck in a role that falls apart when put together with the rest of the script.
